Dr. Mihai Coman, Dean
School of Journalism and Communication Studies
University of Bucharest

Dear Dr. Coman,

It is my great honor and pleasure as the President of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication to congratulate you and your colleagues upon the formation and first meeting of the Asociatia Formatorilor din Jurnalism si Comunicare din Romania. This is a truly historic event and one that portends a bright future for the improvement of journalism and communication education in Romania in the years to come.

During my visit to Romania last year, I was impressed with the intellectual curiosity and scholarly commitment of the faculty and students of journalism that I met from around the country. The dynamism of the media marketplace, the drive of the students to learn as much as they can, and the dedication to expanding knowledge of communication processes were impressive. I am confident that the unified efforts of the Romanian community of journalism and communication education through the Asociatia Formatorilor din Jurnalism si Comunicare will expand opportunities for learning throughout the country and raise the quality of education to new levels of excellence.

I commend you and your colleagues for this noble effort.

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication stands ready to act as a partner for you in this laudable endeavor. AEJMC offers 3,600 members who work in 29 divisions, interest groups, and commissions studying all aspects of journalism, mass communication, and communication education. We have an active international communication division committed to working with educators around the world to improve journalism education. Our organization is 95 years old and we hold an annual convention each summer in cities in the United States and we offer a number of scholarly journals that span the breadth of knowledge of our field. We invite your members to join us whenever they can and to read our journals.

AEJMC also is a member of the World Journalism Education Council, an organization of 28 journalism and mass communication associations in different parts of the world that met for the first time in Singapore the summer of 2007. The Council issued a Statement of Principles of Journalism Education and plans another meeting in two years. I hope Asociatia Formatorilor din Jurnalism si Comunicare din Romania will consider sending representatives to that meeting and will consider joining the Council.

Please know that your colleagues in Journalism and Mass Communication education in the United States salute you upon the birth of this important new organization of journalism educators in Romania. We stand with you in your commitment to offer strong programs to improve the practices of media industries and expand opportunities for scholarship in communication for the people of Romania.

Sincerely,
